Generellt bra

Lärarna är bra och man lär sig mycket, men eleverna kan vara ganska stökiga och omotiverade. Det beror kanske däremot på vilken linje man går. Bra stämning i klasserna.

everyone is complaining too much

To say that my high school experience was 100% good would be a lie, but all schools have negatives. All schools have teachers that probably shouldn’t be teaching. And unfortunately covid affected our high school experience greatly.

But overall, IHGR was our everyday life for the last 3 years and it’s exactly how u would imagine a small international school would be. The teachers and EHT staff all know you personally and focus on you, the students all somewhat know each other and having friendgroups between classes wasn’t uncommon at all. IHGR truly had that family feeling and familiarity it promised.

ofc i had a few bad experiences with teachers but i also has truly amazing teachers that were one in a million, they were so competent and made each class fun yet still informative which is what i think a teacher should do, as well as push u to want to be the best

I went the natural science program and i’m content with my experience. If hadn’t been for covid it would probably have been even better. Especially since covid took away the extra things that make IHGR the school it is. Like for instance the trips and activities, traveling for free to uganda or hungary (or other exchanges ihgr offers) truly is a privilege as well as the friendly environment in the corridors.

If you want to study at a small school in english, have the teachers focus on you and be able to help you with both school things and mental health, travel and see familiar faces everyday, this is the school for you.

Thank you so much for your honest words. We empathize and feel the same way regarding your comments about the pandemic. Trust us, we would have loved to have been able to offer the student exchange programs to Hungary and Uganda. The pandemic truly turned everything upside down. At the same time, we learned new ways to communicate digitally with you, sometimes digital lessons were more effective than the physical ones. Overall, it is safe to say though that we learn best when we can speak and socialize in the same room, and not behind a screen. We hope you feel that you can come back and visit us; you are a part of the IHGR family, once-always!

One of the best high schools in Gothenburg 😊 however It would be better if they changed the computer science teacher because all he did was telling us to watch YouTube videos and do most of the work by ourselves, which resulted into many students failing the subject.

A high school which in many ways prepares you for the future

Being a student at IHGR was always a roller coaster of emotions. At times very stressful, but most often very rewarding. This school gave me an international and understanding outlook on things, good study techniques and great friends. The atmosphere between students is mostly positive and I enjoyed the school spirit, even though it was more present in the beginning of my stay.
I was unhappy with the teaching at times, but I also had a few wonderful teachers which made up for the ones who weren’t.
All and all, I am happy that I chose to study IB at IHGR - and I advise you to do the same if you find the program interesting.
There are however a few things that could be improved, including the teaching. Teachers who doesn’t contribute to the students wellbeing our knowledge should not be excused and the principal should always take the students complains into account: no matter what it concerns.

Extremely supportive environment.

I spent three years studying at IHGR and have little to no negative things to say about this school. It is very easy to point at minuscule things that are found in every high school, like heavy workload or mediocre school food. But IHGR as a whole has provided me with nothing but life skills that I will take with me for the rest of my life. It is basically what you make of it as a student. If you show up to school as much as you can, and show the teachers that you are interested in learning and getting the support that you need, the teachers will go above and beyond that and push you to your highest potential. It would be a lie to say that all my experiences with teachers at IHGR are 100% positive, but I would definitely not be doing most of the punctual teachers a favor by grouping them all in one negative word. IHGR is your stepping stone towards adulthood—you are responsible for a lot more things than you would be in elementary school—if you feel like you’re not ready for that, then maybe this school is not for you.

Thank you for the kind words. It warms our hearts knowing that your high school experience met your expectations, and that we were able to make your 3 years with us memorable. No school is perfect, and we have parts we would like to develop and be more creative with at IHGR but trust us, we are doing our uttermost to foster all our students into becoming decent world citizens. Please come back and visit us, and don’t forget, once-always!

You are competing with a handicap.

The school building is cramped and the inside isn't as nice as the outside, it feels like you are stuck in high school / primary school because there are much younger children downstairs.

I studied IB, and the main problem with this course is that you are competing with students internationally that have much better teachers and learning environments. Your grades depend on how well people in Asia, the USA and the EU do on the final exams, it is distributed on a bell curve. Most of the schools you compete with are private schools for the upper class, with much more teaching hours in school than IHGR can afford, if the parents are really rich they also get their kids private tutors.

The teachers in IHGR don't know what they are doing, they just hope that the individual students figure it out by themselves. Most of them are at least trying to teach you, but sometimes they have to find teachers for subjects that are completely clueless. This school is not a place for learning, it is mostly a place for you to socialise and then you do all the real work at home.

Svar från IHGR - International High School

We are so sorry to hear that your experience of the IB program was not what you had wished for. The program is definitely challenging and requires a lot of discipline and hard work, but we have competent staff that are regularly trained by the IB organization and up to date with the syllabus in each subject. It is important to us to have a good dialogue with the students, and the IB coordinator, teachers, mentors and the principal work actively to promote a learning environment that is motivating. In fact, we guarantee the recommended teaching hours for all our subjects, and have managed to add more resources in Math classes for instance. Our school is small and yes, we do share some floors with the middle school but we are just high school students on our floor, with our own library and social space. A small school, but a big community with a great IHGR alumni.

It is correct that we are not a private school, and that we don’t charge our students to attend our school. However, this means that our students are admitted based on their grades and academic achievements and everyone is entitled to equal opportunity and support at IHGR. Throughout the years, we have been fortunate to see our students graduate with amazing grades, and it all makes it worth the while when they come back and visit us. Our motto, once-always, is truly what makes our school so special.

Helt ok

The teachers and admins rarely listen to the students' concerns and worries thereby creating an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness. Finding a good teacher at this school is like finding a needle in a haystack - close to impossible.
The education is alright but compromised by the lack of teacher engagement in their subjects. This contributed to the challenges experienced on top of the IB course.
In my experience, IB students were often excluded from student activities and from the "IHGR family". Furthermore, the hallways are cramped and unpleasant especially during a pandemic.

Now for the positives; the food was ok and the people I met were pleasant for the most part.

A hard decision.

I chose this school with high expectations. The historic building looked beautiful and inviting. I found myself shaking with excitement as I awaited what I thought would be a lovely three years. The thought of being in an environment where I could finally be whom I wanted and eagerly learn things with help from teachers and friends was just one step away. Turns out, it wasn't at all what I hoped.

Before I get into the negatives I'll get into the positives. The students are lovely and the environment as a whole is extremely accepting. Nobody gets bullied and you find yourself, even after a week of knowing the people there, feeling at home. Some of the teachers encourage you to go forth with what you believe in and offer you substantial amounts of support and well, encouragement. The food in the cafeteria is acceptable and there's a large variety of it if you have dietary restrictions.

As for the negatives. It's near impossible to write papers without having an academic level of English in your arsenal. Therefore I highly suggest that you try to write an academic level paper in English on your own before thinking about enrolling in this school. I noticed how most of my classmates' grades would drop substantially in the beginning because of this exact reason; their papers weren't ''academic enough''.
Speaking a language, English in this example, or trying to learn it does not mean that the only thing you have to do is watch the entire season of Bridgerton and think that you're an English Professor at Oxford at the end of it. It requires a lot more than that.

Another thing. The school might look large on the outside, however, all of our classes are held on the 3rd floor. That's right, you'll share a single floor with nine other classes. This is because there is a compulsory school right below and above the ''high school''. At the beginning of year one, you'll also be eating in the grade school cafeteria as there isn't enough space for the high schoolers to have their cafeteria. This then changes in 2nd and 3rd grade where you'll eat in hvitfeldtska's cafeteria, another high school.

The teachers aren't helpful. Some of them are lovely as mentioned earlier but they're so rare it is like trying to find a golden goose.
In general, it is very hard to get good grades in this school. As it is a mix of cultures and the level of ''smartness'' varies, you might think that you were good enough in your last school but find yourself losing track of your studies and having such low grades that you can barely have enough time to fathom it. You have to dedicate your studies if enrolling in this school. Your education has to be number one. Everything else is behind. If you find yourself going off track and not getting back onto the study wagon, you will most likely end up with a barely passing grade.

At the end of the day think very hard about this decision you're going to make. It doesn't matter what school you choose to enroll rather that you do what you think is right and what makes you happy.

All the best to you, future students, and hopefully alumni.

Pls don’t go to this school

This school helped me improve my English skills and gave me really good friends, but besides that I really didn’t like it. I’m pretty sure everyone in my class had anxiety and stress because the teachers don’t really care about your well-being and gives you a ton of homework and and make learning very hard. I had to be my own teacher and get help from my friends/classmates instead. Of course some of the teachers were really good, but most of them sadly weren’t. I just think this school takes everything way too seriously and prioritizes homework/tests over mental health.

IHGR gymnasiet

I hated the school from the minute I walked in. The teachers treat you like little children and most (but not all) teachers are incapable in their subjects. I chose the natural science path and although I love math and science, some of the classes were impossible. For physics (one of the hardest subjects) I had to teach myself everything because our physics teacher could not teach to save his life. Although everything is taught in English, there is going to be a lot of confusion because some of the books we get are in Swedish which means there is a huge learning barrier as you are learning everything in English but having to translate your books to English too. I went from being a straight A student at IES, to almost failing a few subjects at IHGR. The worst part of the school is also the food. If you are fussy, don’t ever come here. Because not only will the food taste shit, you’ll also have to eat with the little kids (grade 1-9) who share our school . The only positive thing I have to say about this school is that there isn’t any bullying or fighting. We also cannot use our phones in majority of the building because we share it with the elementary school and the little kids aren’t allowed to have their phones.

Nice school, pretty supportive teachers. A very accepting environment but a little weird sometimes. Became gay here. Many opportunities to go abroad with the school, both to Europe and Africa.I wouldn't choose another school if I could.

Your life, your decision

This school is for someone who has had English as their academic language through most of their life. I’ve seen grades of many great students decline merely for lacking in English. Also, if you chose this school be prepared to add the extra hours going through the material from class since not all teachers are too good at explaining. I also don’t recommend choosing it if you’re anything other than extremely left in your ideology. However, if you like studying a lot and don’t mind being your own teacher sometime, go for it!

Unfortunately a very vad school

A school with unsympatethic, mean teachers who make you slowly buy surely lose your confidence. I had to be my own teacher throughout high school. There are some ”guldkorn” between the teachers, but when the majority, excuse me, sucks, it doesn’t really matter. Also, the school building is too small. The only thing that is good (and bad) is that everyone in the school is accepting, there is no bullying at all and everyone suits in. What’s vad about this is that it results in that people can act however they want and still earn respect. To conclude, make the right choice and don’t choose IHGR.

MY OPINION.

I am an SP student and therefore my opinion does not matter and I am the dumb one.
But I shit you not there are days where I literally dread walking through those Harry Potter esce doors because I know that once I've entered I have to sit down and listen through lectures that I will never ever understand and then it resulting in me having to become my own teacher and try to teach myself whatever the hell my teacher just spoke about because if you show an ounce of "I dont understand this" they'll immediately go with "why would you choose an ENGLISH school if you don't understand?" As if it's my problem.
No, it's not that I have some sort of language barrier, I speak fluent English and I understand the language. BUT GODDAMN YOU'RE NOT MAKING SENSE THUs I'M HAVING PROBLEMS.
Otherwise this school's great, amazing atmosphere and the other pupils are lovely to be around.
Very accepting, no one's bullying anyone is this school.
Yeah that's it so...
Bye.

Diversity, great students, great teachers

Great school, many different nationalities, not too big but not too small, very cozy and a great environment with really nice students and teachers. The math teacher for the natural science program, Heather, is amazing! The only downside really is all the middle schoolers on the floor below that r hella annoying. The rotten egg smell comes from hvitfeldtska NOT IHGR

Multiculturalism, atmosphere & acceptance

As a PreIB student (year 1), I have not yet studied at this school long enough for me to write a truly accurate review. However, so far, I feel a sense of belonging with this high school spirit. The many differences that separate us, and the many similarities that bring us together; the way you can be whoever you’d like; the mutual respect amongst students. I could not be more grateful in times like this, for this many people to accept and respect other humans. While the corridors may be small and can feel slightly crowded at times, the way things work out in the hallways is worth it. There is a fridge, microwave and coffeemaker. There is a library on “our” floor, floor three, and another one on floor four (we high schoolers share the building with ISGR, the middle school). We also have a so-called alumni, where we can sit in peace and study. But if you need a complete change of scenery, Stadsbiblioteket is not more than a kilometer or two away. The teachers aren’t that far away either, and they’re there to help you during your three years. I wholeheartedly believe that I will never regret choosing IHGR and the IB program.
